When Dale arrived at Calgary Alternative Employment Services to explore career options, he had his sights set on the hospitality industry as he had prior experience working in this field; and, he was currently employed in a similar setting – for a Condo Association doing seasonal yard work. He had been searching for a hospitality job for over a year but wasn’t having any luck.

Thankfully, after a quick referral to MentorAbility, not only was Dale getting the chance to see what it would be like to work in hospitality, but he was getting that opportunity at one of the oldest, most luxurious and renowned hotels in all of Calgary: The Palliser!

“Dale’s job shadowing experience as a Room Attendant was perfect for him,” said Cal (Dale’s case manager). “He loves physical work, has a great eye for detail, and he enjoys being around people.” Dale said he had a “really great time” being mentored by The Palliser staff and “received a lot of great feedback” from them during the process.

Not only did Dale have all the necessary skills to do the job, but he did it so well that the Palliser offered him a fully-accommodated position with the hotel. “It was awesome that they were willing to accommodate Dale,” said Cal. “And, the staff’s positive feedback was really great for his self-esteem.” Although Dale wasn’t able to take the position due to prior commitments, he gained valuable experience in his chosen industry and will certainly be a wonderful employee for whichever lucky hotel hires him in the future!
