Applied Economics at Work

Having recently graduated university with a degree in Applied Economics, Doug was more than ready to jump into his career; but, Covid made for an uncertain job market and he was unsure of his next step toward employment. Thankfully, Doug looked into his university’s career counselling program and they referred him to MentorAbility — a partnership that ultimately landed Doug a great job with a big Tech company!

OpenText, a huge Information Management Solutions company based in Waterloo, already had a working relationship with MentorAbility; and Doug was interested in learning more about OpenText, so it was the perfect match! Doug impressed management so much during his mentorship that they encouraged him to apply for a position. He went through a competitive recruitment process and was hired as a Billing Coordinator. “Doug hit the ground running” said Amanda from OpenText. “The energy he brings lifts people up and gets them excited. He’s been an incredible superstar and asset to the team.”

Doug said his MentorAbility Experience “blew his mind” because of how thorough it was and how supportive everyone was of his disability. Thanks to our program, Doug was able to have “amazing conversations” about accommodations in his new role, saying, OpenText “met my needs and I’m able to perform at my best.”

Doug cannot recommend the MentorAbility Program enough either, exclaiming: “MentorAbility is a necessary tool for anyone with a disability that is career seeking” and everyone should “reach out and take advantage of it!”

Thanks for the kind words Doug! We’re happy all your hard work paid off!
