MentorAbility Experience Stories: Ian & James

Short-term mentoring experiences provide learning opportunities for both the mentor and the person being mentored.

Jumping into the Ring!

MentorAbility is all about making connections — links between mentors and proteges, people and organizations, and turning dreams into reality. So, when Ian came to us and said he wanted to be a professional wrestler, we got to work immediately on connecting him with someone with real, in-ring wrestling experience.

Thankfully, we didn’t have to look very far as TEAM Work Cooperative’s Case Manager/“Ring General Extraordinaire” James wrestled professionally and was more than happy to take Ian under his wing. James’ passion for wrestling is very strong and hearing about Ian’s interest in the sport got him excited to share his knowledge with a younger generation of soon-to-be grapplers.

“When you get into wrestling, it’s in your blood,” James admitted passionately, and Ian most certainly agreed — excited to get down to business. Luckily, Ian didn’t have to wait long to begin training, as James offered him steps to start with immediately: get into the gym and “condition his body for wrestling;” network with local wrestlers and form contacts; volunteer at local wrestling events; and consider getting a part-time job to pay for initial expenses.

James’ mentorship continued on to explain the psychology of wrestling and further detail resources that Ian could take advantage of in the future, making for a very informative and “action packed” MentorAbility Experience. Ian was thankful to receive James’ unique guidance and excited to get his training started in hopes of getting in the ring someday.

It’s a long road to the top of the wrestling world, but it all starts with a single step! Can’t wait to see you on TV in the future Ian!
