Mentorability Experience Stories: Sydney

This is a great opportunity to experience what it’s like to have a great job and get into a proper career! I loved my experience very much.

Cooking up a storm

The MentorAbility Program helps people gain employment experience they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to find on their own. And, in some special cases, it helps people become employed too!! This is exactly the case with Sydney who was mentored by staff at KOKO Patisserie in Regina and ended up being offered a job!

Sydney always had a passion for baking, as she grew up making delicious baked goods with her grandmother and family. She knew she was an excellent baker, and she loved seeing people enjoy her wonderful creations. All she needed was an opportunity to prove herself.

MentorAbility helped open the door to that very opportunity by arranging a full day of mentorship for Sydney at KOKO Patisserie, and she did all the rest! Sydney said she felt a “connection with the other workers” there from the beginning and the boss was “very understanding” of her Autism which was important for her to feel at ease. Despite that fact that the bakery wasn’t hiring, Sydney’s hard work made such an impression on everyone that they created a position for her and hired her immediately!

Sydney says the job has “changed her life in a good way” as she’s able to save for the future now, and it’s also “given her more confidence” as she’s able to put her baking skills on full display. For anyone wondering if the MentorAbility Experience is for them, Sydney says they should definitely go for it: “This is a great opportunity to experience what it’s like to have a great job and get into a proper career! I loved my experience very much.”

Awesome work, Sydney! Congratulations on the new job!
