MentorAbility Experience Stories: Lacey
Exploring a New Path
Lacey was interested in exploring a career in after school programming. After learning about a potential mentorship opportunity from the Vocational Training Centre manager, the MentorAbility New Brunswick team coordinated a meeting between Lacey and Amanda, the director of the local Boys and Girls Club. Amanda provided a tour of the facility and later introduced Lacey to the afterschool program supervisor.
Lacey shadowed the program supervisor, spent time with the children in the program, assisted with organizing activities, and learned about the role of being an after-school care provider. Lacey had an opportunity to speak with the staff about the required certification and training,
Lacey told us that when she arrived, they surprised her with a staff T-shirt to wear. “That made me so happy! It helped me feel like I was part of the team”, Lacey remarked. “It was an amazing day!”.
Lacey increased her understanding of what is involved with organizing afterschool programs and supervising children. She left the mentorship interested in working in this field in the future.
Thank-you for sharing your story with us Lacey! We wish you much success in your future career working with children!
